Danica Wong, Head of State

 Danica attends the University of British Columbia where she is finishing up an M.A. in Political Science and has already completed a B.A. in Honours Political Science and Honours French. She has lived in Vancouver all her life, and looks forward to introducing the other delegates to this great city.

Ania Salehirad, Minister of Defense

Ania attends the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and is currently pursuing her B.A. in Political Science with a minor specialization in Law and Society.  She is hoping to later pursue a career in international corporate law.  Ania has been living in Vancouver for 10 years. In her spare time, she enjoys skiing, playing tennis, playing the piano and travelling.

Arber Fetiu, Minister of Foreign Affairs

Arber has finished a B.A. in International Studies and Languages at Laval university and he will be starting an M.A. on "Citizenship, migration and diversity" at the University of Ottawa in September.  He is passionate on discovering new "points of contact" between different cultures.  He is a Kosovo Albanian who arrived in Canada six years ago.  As a European, he loves playing soccer and laughing.  As a Quebecois, he loves eating pouting and is proud of his French accent.


Wren Laing, Minister of Environment

Wren is in her second year of studies at McGill University in Montreal, double majoring in comparative politics and human geography. She has a passion for travelling, having lived in both Europe and Africa, and is an avid runner, violinist and volunteer. She is very excited to meet and work with the rest of the delegates!


Hana Dhanji, Minister of Health

Hana is a senior undergraduate student at the University of Toronto, pursuing an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations, Health Studies and Psychology. She will begin her Masters in International Affairs in the fall of 2010 at the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies at the University of Geneva. She hopes to work for the United Nations and eventually pursue a Juris Doctor and Ph.D. in International Relations.


Keith Sulzer, Minister of Economics

Keith attends the University of Calgary where he is completing a B.A. in Economics. The ideas of Micro-credit are what first attracted him to the field. In addition to his studies Keith trains and competes for Canada in Long Track Speed Skating.

Laura Spencer, Minister of Development

Laura attends Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, pursuing a Masters in Public Policy. She has a lot of experience living, researching and working in different countries as well as travelling as a hobby. She plays ultimate (Frisbee) as a true West-Coast Canadian and strives for a balance of school, work and fun.

Application Requirements for The Canadian Delegation:
  • Applicants should be Canadian nationals and/or have gone through a Canadian educational institution at the post-secondary level.
  • Applicants must be current post-secondary students or post-secondary graduates under the age of 30.
  • All applicants to the Canadian delegation are required to submit an application package including an application form, a 500-word motivation letter and CV to
  • Applicants to the Canadian delegation must, in their covering letter, indicate their top three preferences in ministerial positions. The positions are as follows:
    • Head of State
    • Sherpa
    • Minister of Health
    • Minister of Economics
    • Minister of Finance
    • Minister of Development
    • Minister of Environment
    • Minister of Foreign Affairs
    • Minister of Defense

Application Requirements for the IMF Delegate (One position):
  • Applicants must be current post-secondary students or post-secondary graduates under the age of 30, regardless of nationality.
  • Knowledge/experience in IMF structure, functions or issues.
  • A demonstrated keen interest in the functions and affairs of the IMF
  • All applicants are required to submit an application package including an application form, a 500-word motivation letter and CV to

 

What we are looking for in a delegate:

Applications are judged on an individual basis, but we will specifically be looking for the following five qualities:

  1. Teamwork/Leadership Experiences: Delegates will have demonstrated experience working in teams and taking on leadership responsibilities.
  2. Interest/Expertise in Global Issues: Delegates must have an interest in international dialogue with preferences given to those with special interest or expertise in the portfolios they are applying for.
  3. Communication Skills: Delegates must possess written and verbal communication skills demonstrated through team-basedactivities.
  4. International Experience/Cultural Sensitivity: Intercultural sensitivity and cultural awareness are required for successful applicants. Although not required, preference is given to those with some international experiences.
  5. Variety of Background: We want people from diverse experiences with different academic backgrounds, extra-curricular experiences, and life stories. Students with backgrounds in science and engineering are encouraged to apply.

 

The Application/Selection Process:

Application must be received by January 31, 2010, 4:30 pm (Pacific Time). The applications will be judged in two rounds. The first round will be done by the executives of the Canadian organizing committee. Then those applicants who make it onto the second round will be evaluated by a panel of judges composed of Canadian professors, civil servants, business leaders, former delegates, and journalists.

The following are the members of the jury panel responsible for selecting the Canadian delegation this year:

  • Lisa Wolff, Director of Advocacy and Education for UNICEF Canada
  • Louis Boisvert, Director of the Investment Bureau of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, retired from a diplomatic career at DFAIT
  • Peter Campbell, Consul General of Canada in Osaka, Minister (Commercial) in Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, retired Canadian diplomat
  • Jonathan Zee, Executive of YFID for 2008-2009 and Canadian delegate at the 2008 G8 Youth Summit in Japan

 

Delegation Fee:

The cost of participation in the G8/G20 Youth Summit is $600 CAD and is due in full on March 1, 2010. While each delegate is responsible for his/her own delegation fee, some support may be provided through his/her respective national organisational committee. For more information on potential financial assistance and payment of your delegation fee, please contact your respective delegation organisational committee.
